You’d think that with a title like “America’s Most Hated Woman,” everyone would know who Madalyn Murray O’Hair was. But clearly, that’s not the case. So, keep scrolling to find out who is Madalyn Murray O’Hair and why is she the most hated woman in America!
Who was the Most Hated Woman in America and what did she do?
Murray O’Hair is not well-known outside of the United States, yet she lived a remarkable life. She achieved recognition for working to force bible readings out of schools long before Richard Dawkins. She founded American Atheists, a national organization, in 1963. S
he was a Texas homemaker who objected to her kid praying in class. O’Hair’s family life was out of the ordinary even by today’s norms. She railed against religion while living with her pious parents. Madalyn O’Hair was born in 1919 to a devout Pennsylvania family and grew up to be the modern atheist movement’s witty, foul-mouthed, and feud-prone face.
In 1960, O’Hair filed a lawsuit against the Baltimore City Public School System, claiming that her son’s participation in required Bible readings was unconstitutional. The Murray v. Curlett case had made it to the Supreme Court by 1963. A decision by an 8-1 majority put a stop to official Bible reading in public schools, which angered people across the country.
Madalyn Murray O’Hair was labeled “America’s Most Hated Woman” in 1964 by Life magazine. As America’s top atheist and the woman who had defeated religion in public schools, O’Hair, a Baltimore social worker and civil rights activist, reveled in the public hatred.
Her success prompted her to raise objections when American astronauts read scripture during space launches and when a nativity scene was displayed in the Texas Capitol’s rotunda. She sought to have the phrase “In God, We Trust” removed from US money, as well as the phrase “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance. She was like a big-time wrestling villain in the largely god-fearing America of the 1960s and 1970s.
O’Hair was an ardent feminist in addition to being an atheist. She believed in “complete equality with men: intellectual, professional, economic, social, and sexual; they’re all equally essential, and they’re all equally lacking in American society today.” O’Hair stated in a ground-breaking interview with Playboy in 1965.
About American men, she said: “I’m not saying that all American men are this way, but nine out of ten are breast-fixated, wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am cretins who just don’t give a damn about anyone’s gratification but their own.”
On August 27, 1995, O’Hair, along with her son Jon and granddaughter Robin, vanished without a trace. “The Murray O’Hair family has been called out of town on an emergency basis. We do not know how long we will be gone at the time of the writing of this memo.” a mysterious notice on the closed door of the American Atheists said. However, O’Hair’s unkempt home, which was littered with open pill bottles and abandoned pets, wasn’t the abode of someone on a pre-arranged vacation.
When she vanished in 1995, many people assumed she had fled the country with money from her organization.
They were eventually found to have been abducted and killed by David Roland Waters, a former American Atheists employee who had previously stolen money from the organization. It wouldn’t be until 2001 that they were discovered. The truth was only revealed years later, when a private investigator, Tim Young, and a reporter, John MacCormack, collaborated on a piece on the O’Hairs. They’d been decapitated, burnt, and buried in a field. It was a dreadful finish for one of the most intriguing women of the twentieth century.
Given her high-profile existence and strange disappearance, it’s astonishing that O’Hair is almost forgotten now. Her disappearance turned out to be an abduction and extortion conspiracy that took six years to solve when the burnt remains of O’Hair and several family members were discovered on a remote property in southwest Texas.
So, this was the story of The Most Hated Woman In America. If you are more interested in her life story then you’ll be delighted to know there’s a movie about her life. In 2017, Netflix released a biopic of O’Hair starring Melissa Leo. The film is unearthing O’Hair’s narrative from the dusty archives of history.
