Can a Soap Opera Inspire a Woman to Change Her Life?

Women’s World Banking Network Member Banco ADOPEM Launches a Social Soap Opera to Empower Women in the Dominican Republic with Financial Education Themes

Women’s World Banking recently launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at encouraging women of the Dominican Republic to become better money managers, to build savings, and to create a more secure future for themselves and their families.  Contracorriente, a new social soap opera, will be broadcasted by Telesistema, a national channel of the Dominican Republic.  This initiative is the result of a 2 year collaboration between WWB, Banco ADOPEM, the International Center for Research on Women, Reach Global, and the Nicaraguan NGO Puntos de Encuentro.  The show features the Ortizes, a working class family dealing with financial challenges and conflicts at home, and will run in tandem with the Banco ADOPEM’s national campaign to encourage savings. The project includes a media campaign and financial education components which were developed with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  To learn more about the project, please visit Women’s World Banking.
